Gender Empowerment

What we do in relation to Gender Empowerment

In the context of AWYAD, gender empowerment signifies the process of equipping women and girls with the knowledge, skills, resources, and confidence necessary to assert their rights, make informed decisions, and actively participate in all aspects of society. This empowerment is not just about individual growth but also about transforming societal structures to foster gender equity and eliminate barriers to women’s and girls’ full participation.

Gender empowerment is crucial to AWYAD’s programming because it addresses the systemic inequalities that hinder development and progress. Empowering women and girls lead to healthier families, more resilient communities, and more robust economies. It is a fundamental human right and a cornerstone for achieving broader development goals. By focusing on gender empowerment, AWYAD ensures that its programs are inclusive, equitable, and sustainable.

AWYAD’s gender empowerment programming is built on several key components. First, we emphasize women and girls’ leadership. We believe that fostering leadership skills among women and girls is essential for building a generation of change-makers who can advocate for themselves and others. Through various training programs, mentorship opportunities, and leadership workshops, we cultivate their ability to lead in their communities, workplaces, and beyond.

Gender equity and women’s access to resources are also central to our efforts. We strive to dismantle the economic barriers that women face by providing access to financial services, vocational training, and entrepreneurial opportunities. By ensuring women have the resources they need to thrive, we help create a more balanced and fair society where both men and women can contribute equally to economic growth.

Another critical component is amplifying women and girls’ voices and safeguarding their dignity. AWYAD creates platforms for women and girls to share their experiences, voice their concerns, and participate in decision-making processes. We engage in community dialogues, policy advocacy, and media campaigns to elevate their voices and ensure their perspectives are heard and respected.

Promoting gender empowerment at AWYAD involves several transformative approaches. We adopt participatory and co-creation methodologies, ensuring that women and girls are actively involved in designing and implementing programs that affect them. This inclusive approach not only empowers them but also ensures that our interventions are relevant and effective.

Our programming is also guided by a rights-based approach, recognizing that gender empowerment is a matter of justice and equality. We align our efforts with international human rights standards and advocate for policies that protect and promote women’s rights. By collaborating with local and international partners, we work towards creating an enabling environment where gender equality can flourish.

AWYAD employs community-based strategies to engage men and boys as allies in gender empowerment. We believe that achieving true gender equity requires transforming societal norms and attitudes. Through awareness campaigns, educational programs, and community engagement, we encourage men and boys to challenge stereotypes, support gender equality, and become advocates for change.

AWYAD adopted and uses the following gender transformative approaches to promote gender empowerment.

Gender Action Learning Systems Methodology

AWYAD adopted the Gender Action Learning System (GALS) to promote gender empowerment through a participatory, inclusive, and transformative process. GALS involves a cyclical process of visioning, analysis, action planning, implementation, and monitoring. It starts with participants creating visual representations of their aspirations, fostering a broad vision for the future. This is followed by an analysis phase, where participants use visual tools to examine their situations, uncovering inequalities and understanding power dynamics. Action plans are then developed to address issues and achieve visions, designed to be specific, measurable, achievable, relevant, and time-bound (SMART). GALS ensures community engagement, promoting mutual respect and cooperation by involving both women and men. Capacity-building sessions enhance participants’ ability to use GALS tools independently, ensuring sustainability. It addresses gender-based violence by helping communities identify root causes and develop action plans, creating safer environments for women and girls.

Community Conversations approach

AWYAD employs the Community Conversations approach, a dialogue-based method that encourages community members to engage in discussions and reflections on gender norms, power relations, and other social issues. This approach aims to foster collective understanding and inspire action towards gender equality. Through these conversations, AWYAD facilitates an inclusive environment where individuals can voice their experiences, challenges, and aspirations, promoting a deeper awareness and commitment to gender equality within the community.

Women and Men Own Fora

AWYAD uses the “women own fora” and “men own fora” as safe spaces, providing dedicated environments where men and women can engage in discussions and offer mutual support to promote gender empowerment. These forums encourage open dialogue and reflection on personal experiences, challenges, and strategies for overcoming gender-based obstacles. By fostering a sense of community and solidarity, AWYAD aims to strengthen the collective capacity of men and women to advocate for and achieve gender equality.

GEM and BEM Clubs

AWYAD utilizes Girls Empowerment Clubs to promote gender equality and empowerment among girls in schools and communities. AWYAD also utilizes Boy Empowerment Clubs to promote gender equality and empowerment among girls in schools and communities. These clubs serve as platforms for young girls and boys to come together, learn, and discuss various issues related to gender norms, rights, and personal development. Through these clubs, AWYAD provides mentorship, educational resources, and leadership training, empowering young individuals to become advocates for gender equality and agents of change within their communities. These clubs help to address specific needs and challenges faced by girls and boys, which fosters a more inclusive and supportive environment for all.

"HeForShe" solidarity campaign

AWYAD has embraced the “HeForShe” solidarity campaign initiated by UN Women. This campaign is designed to actively engage men and boys as advocates and agents of change for gender equality. By incorporating HeForShe, AWYAD aims to foster a more inclusive environment where gender norms are challenged and redefined. The initiative encourages men and boys to take a stand against gender-based violence and discrimination, promoting a culture of mutual respect and support. Through various activities and programs, AWYAD works to create awareness, build capacity, and mobilize communities to support gender equality and women’s empowerment.
